About Sou'wester Outfitting - Caribou Hunting in Newfoundland Canada

Caribou Hunting in Newfoundland CanadaA family owned and operated outfitting service, Sou’wester Outfitting has been providing world class hunts since the early 1990's. Sou'wester Outfitting operates two modern remote fly-in lodges on the island of Newfoundland and offers fully guided single or combination hunts for moose, Woodland Caribou and black bear for the serious big game hunting enthusiast. Both lodges are among the most remote in Newfoundland and are situated on the southwest coast, one at the headwaters of Grey River and the other at the headwaters of Dolland Brook. Both sites have healthy big game populations and offer the hunter the opportunity to take the animal of one’s choice and the potential of making that once-in-a-lifetime kill which may qualify for Boone and Crockett or Pope and Young recognition.

These legendary seafarers have provided Newfoundland with a rich heritage that can now be experienced directly through Sou'wester Outfitting. Sou'wester Outfitting is extremely proud to be able to offer its guests the unique opportunity to be guided and entertained by descendants of the courageous men who have shaped our history. Types of Hunting - Sou'wester Outfitting's Hunts are Spot and Stalk in Nature

All hunts offered through Sou'wester Outfitting are spot and stalk in nature. This method of hunting requires the hunter to hike a great deal of terrain while keeping a lookout for the quarry of one's choice. All hunts are demanding with the hunt for moose being the most physically challenging of all. Sou'wester Outfitting's wilderness lodges are located at Loon Lake and Decker’s Pond. Loon Lake flows into Grey River while Decker’s Pond flows into Dolland Brook. The terrain in the immediate vicinity of both lodges offers habitat for all three animals.

While Woodland Caribou are mostly found and hunted in open areas, moose and black bear on the other hand enjoy a more wooded habitat. The terrain in which Woodland Caribou are hunted is an open tundra-like setting with many knolls from which a vast amount of area can be surveyed. The terrain does offer sparse vegetation and this along with the features of the physical landscape offer optimal conditions for stalking game. The conditions are ideal for the ultimate rifle, bow or muzzleloader hunting experience.

Although moose can be found anywhere throughout the area, most of the hunting takes place in the river valleys which consists of wooded areas with bogs and other open areas. Spike Camps, approximately a two-hour hike from the lodges, provide an opportunity to overnight and the ambiance of a quintessential wilderness hunting adventure.
Sou'wester Outfitting's black bear hunts are offered as incidental hunts along with moose or caribou. Hunters have the choice of picking up a Newfoundland black bear license and paying only upon harvest. Bears are not baited and are mostly taken when hunting for another animal.
